These tests require skaters to follow detailed, pre-determined patterns on the ice, often shown in a diagram that specifies each step and footwork for every beat of the music. Skaters are evaluated on their ability to execute the pattern accurately while demonstrating musicality.
US Figure Skating (USFSA) singles tests are designed to assess a skater's technical skills and performance in freestyle programs, gradually increasing in difficulty as the skater progresses through different levels. These tests serve as a pathway for skaters to demonstrate their abilities and advance to higher levels of competition.
Formerly known as "Moves in the Field", Skating skills must be skated with good edges, control, flow, extension, carriage and rhythm. An even speed and flow should be maintained throughout. Maximum utilization of the ice surface is desirable. Ice coverage must not be obtained by the use of flat or shallow edges. See here for USFSA's skater checklist for skating skills.
